On November 2, Lexicon’s executive editor, Kathy Dorff, joined three other industry professionals to work with Drake University students on their business plans for a magazine publishing project. Students in the class, taught by Lexicon CEO Dr. Catherine Staub, are each being charged with the task of launching a new magazine, beginning with the development of a business plan. The plans included creating a magazine concept, identifying partner sponsors, evaluating competition, and assembling budgets. “The students’ plans were very thorough and realistic,” Dorff says. “I was impressed by their grasp of the essential components required in a business plan and by their creative approaches to the project.” Dorff and the others met in small groups with the students, workshopping their plans in progress and offering real-world suggestions for improvements. After this step, students will begin to develop a design prototype for their magazines, presenting their final plans later this semester.
