6 Tips for Perfecting Your Mission Statement

Marketing Strategy

Mission statements are a crucial part of every organization. Why? Ideally, your mission statement guides every part of your marketing strategy and tells your prospective clients what they can expect from you. Whether you are creating your first mission statement or refining your current one, it’s important that it is well crafted and true to your organization’s core values and purpose.

Make sure your mission statement accurately reflects your organizational goals using these six tips:

1. Ask yourself four questions:

What do we do? How do we do it? Who is our audience? What value are we bringing them? Your mission statement should clearly answer these four questions.

2. Keep it short:

Try to capture the essence of your company in as few words as possible. You don’t want to write a page-long mission statement that could bore potential clients and end up looking more like a company description.

3. Take your time:

It’s not going to come to you in a matter of minutes, or even hours. Like most editorial content, working on your mission statement a couple of hours a day for a few days will help you create a high-quality statement.

4. Polish it:

Once you feel comfortable with the statement, look at how you can improve upon it even further. Inject the personality of your company, or jazz it up with active verbs and other colorful words that will engage your reader.

5. Test it on your employees:

Your employees are your best test subjects. Not only are they committed to your organization’s success, but they are also are familiar with your products and services and the wants and needs of your target customer.

6. Keep it top-of-mind:

Post your mission statement on your website. Add it to the “About” section on your social media pages. Make it visible. Also request that each of your employees become familiar with your mission statement to ensure that they keep your values and goals top-of-mind at all times.
